“Why am I back?” asked Jon Stewart, returning to “The Daily Show” chair as Monday night host after leaving the program in 2015. He was there in part because Comedy Central ended a yearlong search unable to pick a full-time replacement for Trevor Noah. He was there because his Apple TV+ show “The Problem” ended, after Apple discovered that when you hire a famous political comedian, he’ll want to talk about topics that upset people. His timing was so sharp, his comic exasperation so familiar, you’d think he’d been away for a long weekend instead of more than two presidential terms. Now he was back to tell us that the two likely candidates for president are super, super old.

Yet it almost felt that way during Stewart's return to “The Daily Show” Monday night. Neither will that night prove Stewart can regain the position of prominence he stepped away from in August 2015. He moved swiftly into the news, and up-to-date doings of President Joe Biden and his Republican rival. “The Daily Show” even found one where Trump said he couldn't remember talking about how good his memory is. The “campaign” interlude allowed Stewart, and viewers who had drifted away from “The Daily Show” after he left, to become acquainted with unfamiliar cast members.

When Jon Stewart left "The Daily Show" in 2015, he had a modest but meaningful audience on cable TV. When he comes back next month, he'll find that in his absence, the show's audience has gotten much, much smaller. "The Daily Show's" overall audience has shrunk by 75% — from 2.2 million viewers a night to 570,000. And the age of the audience has skyrocketed because younger viewers are barely watching at all. NEW YORK (AP) — Comedian Jon Stewart is rewinding the clock, returning to “The Daily Show” as a weekly host and executive producing through the 2024 U.S. elections cycle. Comedy Central on Wednesday said Stewart will host the topical TV show, the perch he ruled for 16 years starting in 1999, every Monday starting Feb. 12. Two former correspondents in particular got massive boosts — Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert. '”The show's abrupt end was reportedly triggered due to clashes between Stewart and Apple over its coverage of stories around China and artificial intelligence. A spokesperson did not immediately respond to questions about who will host “The Daily Show” after the November election.

Jon Stewart will return to host “The Daily Show” on Monday nights during the 2024 election campaign, the network announced on Wednesday, bringing the comedian back to the television program that he turned into appointment viewing. “The Daily Show” has been without a permanent host since Trevor Noah stepped down in 2022. It is unclear if Redstone would demand a different premium for selling National Amusements than the remaining shareholders of Paramount Global would obtain. Skydance isn't interested in a deal where it would only acquire National Amusements but not all of Paramount, said the people. Spokespeople for RedBird, Skydance, Paramount Global and National Amusements declined to comment. Discovery has also had preliminary discussions about acquiring Paramount Global, according to people familiar with the matter.

After exiting “The Daily Show” in 2015, Stewart signed a deal with Apple to host a show for the technology company’s nascent streaming service. Convincing Stewart to return to “The Daily Show” is a major coup for Comedy Central. While Trevor Noah received critical acclaim for hosting program after Stewart exited, it never quite had the same cultural impact it did under Stewart’s stewardship. Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios, which is responsible for much of the streamer’s content library, said episodes with Stewart will be available on the platform the day after they air on Comedy Central.
